August Wilson and Lorraine Hansberry were two of the most influential playwrights of the twentieth century and EduStar is proud to host this event. It is important that their legacy of expressing the black cultural experience, through dramatic presentation, be maintained and kept alive for the present as well as future generations.

Who is Eligible?

Anyone 17 years of age or older

A Raisin in the Sun


Participants may choose excerpts from any of one of the “August Wilson’s Century Cycle”, also known as “The Pittsburgh Cycle” (Fences, Gem of the Ocean, Jitney, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, King Hedley II,Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Piano Lesson, Radio Golf, Seven Guitars, Two Trains Running”) and present it as a 2-3 minute monologue. Or, participants may follow the same procedure with Lorraine Hansberry by selecting an excerpt from “A Raisin in the Sun” or “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window”. Monologues are to be memorized and three copies of your selection are to be brought to the judging site.

There will be two rounds of competition, the first being the elimination round. In this round, participants will present their monologue to a panel of judges at Hampton Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama, Inc. , 424 Catalpa Avenue, Hampton, VA 23661.


The participants may choose one of the following two dates to audition:

May 22nd starting at 2 PM.

Tuesday, May 24th starting at 6:30PM.

Finalists will be notified by Thursday, May 26th.

Finalists Presentations:

The final program will be held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, 65 Saunders Road, Newport News 23601, on Monday, June 6, 2022 at 7 PM.


Upon completion of the competition, three monetary awards will be presented as follows:

1st place-$300.00

2nd place-$200.00

3rd place-$100.00
